I know what you’re thinking. Part time instructor, huh? It’s not what you think. This isn’t teaching academic classes in person or online, it’s not working for an online college or tutoring, it is all about teaching what you are passionate about to a group of like-passioned (yes, I made up that word, ha) individuals.
Working as an Instructor on Udemy
Have you heard of Udemy? It is a course marketplace that offers a HUGE SELECTION of courses on just about anything. You can learn how to cook, write code, create video games, excel in affiliate marketing, become a super blogger, find freelance jobs, etc. The list goes on and on.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Create a Udemy account and apply to be an instructor.
Step 2: Create your first course
Step 3: Set up your curriculum, film your videos, submit your test video, and submit your course for approval
Step 4: Get published! Start promoting your course, get students and get income!
It’s a simple 4 step process. It took me about 2 weeks to publish my first course. The only reason it took that long is because after they gave me video feedback I took about 10 days to make any changes and pick up where I left off. I’ve heard of students getting their course published start to finish in 3 or 4 days and that includes the time they took to upload videos, add descriptions, etc. Not bad!
Here is my first course: Social Media Hacks for Beginners
How did I figure out what to make my course about?
I examined my passions. I thought about what I was passionate about, what I was an expert in and how I could teach others what I know. I settled on social media, among other topics I dig (blogging, small business, ecommerce, etc.) and I started creating my outline.
I set up an easy outline just using Microsoft Word. I wrote out what I wanted to talk about, what I want students to gain from the course, etc. Next, I grouped these topics into sections and added them into Udemy under Curriculum.
From here, it’s video time.
I know many folks shy away from video but it’s really not that bad. You don’t have to film your face if you don’t want to and you can just use an easy Powerpoint slide show that you narrate. Easy!
I used Screencastomatic to capture my screens and Powerpoint slides. It was only $15! Get outta here. I was really close to purchasing another screen capture tool that I heard about from a lot of top bloggers but it was almost $200 so I was really pleased to find Screencastomatic. I purchased it with no hestitation and it’s an awesome tool that is really beginner-friendly.
How the video recording works
I didn’t opt for talking head. Talking head means that in your course, there’s a little video of you in the corner talking while the presentation is live. I’ve heard mixed reviews about talking head. Some say it doesn’t impact course enrollment while others say it does. For my first course, I opted out of doing talking head and just ran the presentation narrarating (you hear my voice but don’t see me).
This screen sharing tool is the easiest thing ever. I used a Logitech headset to record my voice. It cost around $50.
So, I screen record and talk. That’s it!
My first course had around 25 slides and is broken down into 8 sections. During the first 24 hours I had around 500 students join the course. If I compare that to my first course with Teachable, I had less than 1/5th of that number. Really puts things into perspective.
Udemy Vs. Teachable
I love Udemy and Teachable. Udemy is great because it’s a marketplace and they actually promote the course. They have 500,000+ monthly visitors so you have potential to get a lot of eyeballs on your course. The downside, their frequent sales brings down your hundred dollar course to $10-$19 often. You can opt out of the sales but don’t expect your course enrollment to be high (if you’re not doing any promotion). With Teachable, it’s in no marketplace which means you are in charge 100% of marketing your course to encourage students to join. This boils down to your marketing skills, marketing budget, and the size of your email list. On the upside, you are in charge of your course price 100% so you will be earning more per course (in most cases) with Teachable.
How do you choose between the two? Don’t. I have both. I’m comparing and contrasting the two platforms and I might sway to one side in the future but for now, I will continue to employ both for my course creation needs.
Back to the course creation process…
Once video is recorded, I double checked my Instructor items:
- Instructor photo/bio/description added
- Curriculum complete and all video uploaded
- Curriculum section descriptions added
- Curriculum preview videos selected
- Submit test video
- Course landing page set up
- Course goals and price set
It sounds like a lot but it doesn’t take very long at all to hit all these items. When I’m set I submit to Udemy Review Team for approval.
The course is approved!
Now what? Promotion time.
With Udemy, something really important..the more students enrolled in your course, the more new students will be more likely to enroll. I mean, if you think about it. If you have 2 courses, one with 2,000 students and one with 20 students, which one would you be more likely to take? The bigger enrolled course, right?
When you start your promo efforts keep this in mind.
Pro Tip: Offer the course for free for the first 24 hours. Set up a coupon code and share it on Facebook, your other social media, Black Hat Forum, Warrior Plus Forum, other niche forums, and your email list. You should be able to get a good number of enrollments quickly.
How to Promote Your Udemy Course?
- Social Media: Good ol’ social media. Hit up EVERY ONE OF YOUR SOCIAL CHANNELS and share your course.
- Blog: If you have a blog, write a post about your course. List it in your sidebar and consider adding a permanent menu item for it.
- Newsletter: Share your new course with newsletter subscribers.
- Forums: Share your course with your forum mates.
- Promoted posts: if you’d like to throw some money at marketing do a boosted Facebook post, promoted pin, or Stumbleupon paid discovery.
- Give it to your friends: Have your friends (blogging friends, business friends, real life hang out friends, and family members) share it within their circles.
- Social influencer marketing: Pay a popular influencer in your industry to post about it in social media or do an email blast to their subscribers.
- Give it away: Stir up some buzz and throw a giveaway, awarding the winner a free copy of your course.
These are just some ideas to get you started. Promotion of your course is HUGE! It will mean the difference between making $30 for the month or $3,000 for the month.
So, here I am, 24 hours after the course has been launched. I’m super excited I fulfilled my goal of launching a course on Udemy. They say, the key to massive success and loads of passive income is to launch multiple courses so I’m off brainstorming so additional courses I can produce.
