Bloggers around the world are completely lost and struggling when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It’s a rare skill that the vast majority of people do not get right and therefore miss out on loads of organic search traffic.
Even worse is that some people get so frustrated with SEO that they implement very un-ethical strategies that can end up getting their site penalized. Luckily if you’re reading this post, I am going to highlight a few essential steps you need to take in order to get the most out of your blog for an SEO standpoint.
1.) Optimize The Main SEO Tags
The first step to a successful SEO campaign is to make sure that your SEO tags are in place and optimized to their fullest potential.
Title Tags– One of the most important factors when it comes to SEO is having optimized Title Tags. The Title Tag is the blue clickable text that is shown in search engines for a given search query. They should be written with the most important keyword phrases in place and be as close to 70 characters as possible, without going over. It’s important that you don’t just stuff keywords into your Title Tags as Google will pick up on this, which will result in lower search rankings. Keep it natural and target your strongest keywords. You should have a unique Title Tag in place for each and every page and each and every blog post.
Meta Descriptions– Although they do not hold as much weight as the Title Tags, the Meta Descriptions are still very important as they are the snippet of text that is shown underneath the Title Tag in the search engines. Each Meta Description should be compelling and unique per page to encourage user click through when they are shown in the search engines (150-160 characters long).
H1 Tags– The H1 Tags are very important in the eyes of Google and should be written with SEO best practices in mind. The H1 Tag is the heading that is above each body of text or copy on a website. They are the only front end facing tag, meaning that they actually appear on the pages/posts of the website and not just in the code. Your H1 Tags should absolutely have your most relevant keyword phrases in place while still reading naturally for your visitors.
Image ALT Tags– The Image ALT Tags are sometimes underestimated and overlooked but offer additional optimization for your website or blog. For each image on your blog, you will want to write an ALT Tag with your target keywords in place. You may be surprised how much benefit you receive from having optimized ALT Tags on your website. This particular tag will also show up when a visitor hovers over the image.
Content Is Truly King
In order to have any chance of your website ranking in the search engines, you must have enough content on your pages for potential discovery. Google favors blogs that are updated with consistent, unique and fresh content that provides massive value for its readers. If your website is a little “thin” in this area, it’s time you re-evaluate your strategy. It’s important to keep a few things in mind when fleshing out your website with more content.
Copy Optimization- What good is having content on your website if it’s not being optimized to the max with SEO best practices in mind? It’s absolutely necessary to strategically add in your target keywords throughout your blog posts, body copy etc. Do not overdue this process, but make sure your keyword density is sufficient enough so Google has something to grab on to.
Internal linking- You will also want to add a few internal links in each one of your blog posts that point to different pages of your website. This is good for two different reasons. One it helps users navigate your website more effectively and two it helps spread link juice (ranking power) throughout the different pages of your website. This is a quick win, that could really help your site going forward.
Consistency- This is really for all my fellow bloggers out there. Consistency is absolutely essential as far as SEO goes. If you’re not posting to your blog at least once per week, then you are really shooting yourself in the foot. Find a balance that works for you. The more consistent content you provide the search engines to crawl, the more of a chance you have to rank for various keywords. So start blogging!
Link Building To Strengthen Overall SEO Efforts
Now that you have the basics down with optimized SEO tags and a healthy amount of content on your site, you are now ready to build some backlinks. Linkbuilding is more of a chore than a strategy to a lot of people and that’s because it does take a bit of research and manual work to get going. However, the benefits can be massive if done correctly and will really help separate you from the competition. Below highlights two extremely powerful strategies that you can get started with today.
Citations- Citations are simply mentions of your business name, address and website on other webpages like Google My Business, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp etc. They are fairly simple to set up and are a key component in the ranking algorithms of Google and Bing. You can either set these up manually or use a platform like Vendasta which is a bit more automated.
Guest Blog Posts- This is hands down one of the most powerful strategies to generate high quality backlinks for your blog. This process consists of reaching out to relevant websites/blogs in your niche and see if they are accepting guest posts. If the answer is yes, you would then write your article with a link back to your website in the content and pass it off to the blog owner. If approved and published, you have just generated a valuable backlink for your own blog! Now it’s important that you approach websites that have a high Domain Authority and large following for the best results.
That just about wraps things up. If you focus on these three strategies above you will literally be ahead of 99% of the competition. Get used to implementing proper SEO techniques from here on out and watch your website progressively soar. Not many people are utilizing these strategies which opens the door to an enormous amount of opportunity. It’s time for you to capitalize on this and take your blog to the top!
