Hey friends, we are talking Alexa hacks today.
SO, WHAT’S ALEXA?
Alexa is a super cool measuring tool that awards you a ranking against your website peers. After you visit Alexa.com simply type in your website URL in the search bar and if your site is ranked, you’ll get a snapshot view of the following:
- Global rank
- Country rank
- Sites linking
- Upstream sites
- Bounce rate
And more. Check out a screenshot of this blog:
WHY ALEXA MATTERS
Alexa takes into account your site traffic and popularity into its ranking measure. It’s a great tool to gauge how well your site is doing. To put things into perspective. Take a look at these popular site Alexa ranks:
- McDonalds.com ranks 9,328 global
- MSNBC.com ranks 1,828
- Wikipedia.org ranks 6
- Google.com ranks 1
HOW IT WORKS
You can visit Alexa.com any time you want to check your rank. It’s free to use the site but you’ll get limited information. Still, great information but you get MUCH more with the paid version.
I started with the Advanced plan at $149/month. Don’t worry, there’s a trial. I tried the top plan for free so I can test out all the features and really get a feel for it.
Let me tell you, ITS AWESOME!
You get so much information and data. It’s super interesting. However, because I’m a new blog owner with limited income, when trial time was over, I opted for the entry plan at $9.99 a month.
The entry plan gives some great detail about your site. You can do site comparisons against other websites and much, much more.
ALEXA HACKS EXPLAINED
These hacks will help you improve your Alexa ranking in no time.
Although I’m a new blogger, I’ve been an entrepreneur for some time and have used Alexa very consistently throughout that time.
These are tried and tested methods that have worked for me. I can’t guarantee they will work for every site but I’m happy to share my tips. Here we go!
1. ADD CONTENT FREQUENTLY
You will want to try to “touch” your site daily, at the very least. I’ve written about this before. Updates and posting new content is great for SEO and will help boost your Alexa ranking at a faster rate. Site update examples:
- Publish new blog posts
- Make post edits
- Changing design/layout
- Adding new categories or pages
- Updating About me or Contact page
- Updating homepage banner or slider
2. BE SOCIAL
Social media is your friend. Hop on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest or other social media platform at least a few times a week. You can even automate it with tools like IFTTT, Buffer, Hootsuite, Retweet Me, Viral Woot and more.
Pro Tip: Tailwind and Boardbooster ARE AMAZING TOOLS for social media auto-posting and optimization! Free trials available on both.
3. JOIN NETWORKING GROUPS
Groups on Facebook, parties on Twitter, group boards on Pinterest, you’ll wanna be a part of all these. Networking will spread the word about your site.
This can involve writing a guest post, participating in a group giveaway or links party. This goes hand in hand with networking. You’ll want this in your Alexa-building arsenal for sure.
Join my Facebook group. Accepting new contributors:
Advertising is optional. I did test some inexpensive advertising to see how it worked for the blog. This included a $100 Adwords voucher that I received for free a while back, Pinterest ads, FB post boosting, and StumbleUpon ads. I did this on a very limited basis and spent under $100 total.
6. INSTALL ALEXA TOOLBAR
This is free. I’ve been increasing my rank fast and furiously and I have to credit the toolbar to some of this. I’ve read from big blogging legends that this is a big contributor as well. See below:
7. GET LINKS
You can get links in a variety of ways. Do not BUY LINKS. This is controversial. You want to build quality back links organically. Buying links can ultimately ruin your Alexa rank. Stay away from buying links! Some examples:
- Comment on blogs
- Guest post
- Be active on social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit
- Join communities like Bloglovin, Fancy, Keep, etc.
8. OPTIMIZE YOUR SITE FOR KEYWORDS
One of my favorite keyword tools is Google Keyword Planner. It’s FREE and very easy to use. Check this out:
And, that wraps it up. Don’t miss this amazing article from Alexa with more helpful tips.
